English cemetery 100 + years old graves Some people think graveyard and cemetery mean the same, but, if we want to be a little nitpicky, we should say that graveyard is a type of cemetery, but a cemetery is usually not a graveyard. To understand the difference, we need a little bit of history. From about the 7th century, the process of burial was firmly in the hands of the Church (meaning the organization), and burying the dead was only allowed on the lands near a church (now referring to the building), the so-called churchyard. The part of the churchyard used for burial is called graveyard, an example of which you can see in the picture. As the population of Europe started to grow, the capacity of graveyards was no longer sufficient (the population of modern Europe is almost 40 times higher than it was in the 7th century). By the end of the 18th century, the unsustainability of church burials became apparent, and completely new places, independent of graveyards, were devised—and these were called cemeteries. The etymology of the two words is also quite intriguing. The origin of "graveyard" is rather obvious; it is a yard filled with graves. However, you might be surprised to hear that "grave" comes from Proto-Germanic *graban, meaning "to dig", and is unrelated to "gravel". Of course, the word "cemetery" did not appear out of the blue when graveyards started to burst at the seams. It comes from Old French cimetiere, which meant, well, graveyard. Nevertheless, the French word originally comes from Greek koimeterion, meaning "a sleeping place". Isn't that poetic?

There is another flow that keeps us falling to the eyes we look into. I was #traveling in #Nepal about a year ago and in the first days when I was #hitchhiking from #Kathmandu to #Pokhara on the way there was a small and quiet #village and three kid were all around me with their #unique and #different #characters in their eyes.

When we think of cats, one of the first images that comes to us is those beautiful little eyes they have, which leave us totally melted down when we look at them. Cats eyes are very special. Through them one can find out, for example, whether or not our little friend is ill. Why do cats' eyes shine? Who ever encountered their cats at night and saw that their eyes seem to shine brightly? Well, in reality the eyes of the kittens do not shine at night, what really happens is that the eyes contain a layer of cells in the back of the eye, called Tapetum lucidum (bright carpet), which reflects all the light received, that the eyes shine. Tapetum lucidum, also present in dogs and other animals usually with nocturnal hunting habits, works just like a mirror, reflecting the light that reaches it.

We hiked nearly 20 miles in one day to see the confluence where Havasu Creek meets the muddy Colorado River in the bottom of the Grand Canyon. We met some very nice people rafting the river who gave us a much appreciated cold soda! I don't think I've ever appreciated a nice cold beverage so much in my life!!

Winter is here, and that means a lot of different things depending on where you’ve chosen to call home. For those bearing the cold, we want to see the unique ins and outs of making it through the chilliest time of the year. Whether it’s heading to Grandma’s in the middle of a blizzard, hitting up the gnarliest sledding hill in town or cozying up to a cup of cocoa in your brand new igloo, we want to see it all! And while the rest of the country complains about how cold their toes are, we want to know what Winter means to those of you soaking up the sun in paradise. How do you make all your friends up North totally jealous? Are you riding around town with the top down? Making a swimming pool in the bed of a pickup truck? Or car camping near a swimming hole? Show us how great January and February can be when you don’t have to dig yourself out of a blizzard. Featuring family and friends is always a plus. Also please consider showing snowy (or sunny) Shell stations with your car as a beauty shot next to the pump.
