The dog (Canis lupus familiaris), in Brazil also called a dog, is a carnivorous mammal of the canine family, subspecies of the wolf, and perhaps the oldest animal domesticated by the human being. Theories postulate that it emerged from the gray wolf of the Asian continent more than 100 000 years ago. Throughout the centuries, through the domestication, the human being realized an artificial selection of the dogs by their aptitudes, physical characteristics or types of behaviors. The result was a great diversity of canine breeds, which vary in coat and size within their own breeds, currently classified into different groups or categories. The vira-lata (in Brazil) or rafeiro (in Portugal) designations are given to dogs with no defined breed or offspring of mestizos.
