My son was late for school. I handed him a bagel as he dashed to catch the bus. The bagel tumbled out of his hand as he rushed, landing cream cheese side down. And it was raining. Needless to say my heart broke for him. The contrast between a sad, downturned bagel and our welcome mat struck me.
