In ancient India, the building of a stupa was used as a tomb, a place to store ashes among nobles or certain figures. Among Buddhas, the stupa became the place to store the ashes of the buddha himself. After the death was cremated, the ashes of buddha were kept in eight separate stupas erected in North India.Building stupa in Indonesia has its own peculiarity in India and in East Asia. In other places many stupa buildings are stand-alone. While in Indonesia, more often found stupa buildings that became part of the temple, such as Mendut Temple, Borobudur Temple, Jawi Temple.
