Before replacing the crucible after doing a bronze poor it is necessary to place a thick piece of cardboard on the pill block the crucible sits on inside the furnace. When the cardboard burns down it creates a carbon layer between the carbide glass crucible and the carbide glass pill block so the two do not stick together. The furnace was heated to 2200 degrees to melt the bronze so when the cardboard is tossed in on the pill block it explodes in a pillar of flame. The crucible has to be placed on the cardboard before it completely burns away. This is the resulting image of what happens in the process. Notice we are not at all concerned. We've done it so many times its second nature and we are in complete control. Cool eh?
