A Common Buckeye butterfly (Junonia coenia) feeds on this brilliant yellow flower. Its wings are slightly ragged.
Spring in Ginnheim . I honestly can't remember whether this is a cherry tree or an almond tree. Frankfurt am Main, March 2014
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is most often white in the wild, but rarely it can be pink, as I found in this field.
An American Lady butterfly (Vanessa virginiensis) feeds from this yellow flower. A skipper butterfly from the Hesperiini tribe is on the other flower in the background.
This Cope's gray tree frog (Dryophytes chrysoscelis) was one of possibly two frogs that I removed from my mother's bathroom about a dozen times last summer! They kept returning. I released this one at this time just as it started to rain.
Frankfurt street scene. I don't remember anything about this particular location, but this was taken in Frankfurt am Main in March 2014.
Smoky Mountain Morning. View from a front porch in the Smoky Mountains of east Tennessee.
Thistle . A thistle volunteering in my office park.
A small grouping of Indian paintbrush (Castilleja indivisa) flowers, a well known spring Texas wildflower, likely all growing from the same plant.
We get a lot of Cope's gray tree frogs (Dryophytes chrysoscelis) in the summer during their breeding season. They actually change colors depending on environment, temperature, time of day, and other factors!
I found an Asian lady beetle on an unseasonably warm day and snapped a quick photo.
A hackberry emperor butterfly (Asterocampa celtis) rests with its wings fully outstretched on an old, sunbleached wooden deck.
A brilliant passion flower from the passion vines growing at my hometown's community garden.
My cat Harald roaming in the tall grass in my great grandparents' hay field.
A single blossom of the Texas paintbrush or Indian paintbrush, Castilleja indivisa. I associate these flowers the most with spring but a local naturalist assured me they have been recorded blooming in every month of the year.
Dinner Companion. I came home from a long day at work and my cat, Harald, sat politely in the chair next to me as if he was keeping me company.
Winter Warmth. Bee on a dandelion in January. This is winter in Texas.
This is a showy evening primrose (Oenothera speciosa), a native spring wildflower that is common to my home in Texas.
Cold Spring Creek. On a warm day in early spring, people were already dipping their toes in the water of this creek. I felt it must be far too cold.
D10 Collection. A collection of ten sided dice used to play tabletop role-playing games.
Harald the Grey, Knight of the Order of the Lap. My cat Harald making a bad day better by sitting on me.
Bernard's Homecoming. This was my first photo of this teddy bear, whom I patched up and named Bernard.
Crocuses. White crocuses at the Palmengarten in Frankfurt am Main, March 2014.
Hazel eye . I didn't actually mean to upload this photo.
First Green. A walk in my local park in early spring, after a relatively wet winter, shows lots of new growth.
What Might Have Been . I almost didn't want to post this photo because it's so personal to my family. This is the grave marker for my cousin who was stillborn. Not long afterwards, her father (my uncle) died of brain cancer. Even now, over thirty years later, this affects us.
Atypical Indian Blanket . Gaillardia pulchella are usually red and yellow, but over the last few years some yellow only specimens have been coming up in this spot.
A Queen butterfly (Danaus gilippus) feeds from this bright yellow flower with its wings folded on a sunny afternoon.

There's my plane! . After a flight delay, I was relieved to see my plane arriving at the gate.
I drove all over looking for some of these to photograph last spring. These are the prairie paintbrush or the purple paintbrush, Castilleja purpurea.
This strange puffball mushroom is known as an earthstar (Geastrum sp). I spotted several of them during an unusually rainy September.
Gutted Memories. Part of a series of photos I took of my great grandparents' home before it was torn down.
This is Speedy, my best guinea hen. Guinea fowl are a bit like chickens, but more wild, and they're great for pest control.
A male Queen butterfly (Danaus gilippus) rests on a mountain cedar (juniperus ashei) with fully outstretched wings.
A big yellow garden spider (Argiope aurantia) climbs down to look at me as I walk around her web taking photos from all angles. I have several other shots of this spider available.
Free Cone Day! . My friends and I went to Dairy Queen to celebrate free cone day.
A Red Admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) lands on a yellow flower, seen from above with its wings fully open.
A Bordered Patch butterfly (Chlosyne lacinia) and a much smaller Alianthus webworm moth (Atteva aurea) share space on this yellow flower.
Blanket Puppy. This puppy, Ash, is part greyhound, which means he's got a short coat and not much flesh on his bones. Therefore, he prefers to spend winter days in a nest of blankets.
